SwAr Ashram Yoga & Library
India is a vast, multi-layered inter-dimensional Library. Its ancient culture holds intelligence across the dimensions, even as shrouded in modern physical adaptations. Swami Anantram has left in our care, nearly 700 Advaitic, Yoga Vedantic, Theosophic & Interfaith Texts. Yet, one need not search any rare books to access the living traditions.
This immense intelligence of ancient teachings, technologies & therapies is Yoga. Ancient India is not a dead culture, it is alive & thriving, survived the British colonization by powerful peaceful protest, when indigenous cultures of larger continents were reduced to single digit percentages by war. You can certainly read many books. At the end of it all, as the great Sage Patanjali has instructed, ‘close the book’. Now, read this Living Library across the pages of faces that reside in the sea of humanity of a billion Indian pairs of eyes. Dive into India’s colorful waters, the diverse interpretations of living divinity that live hand in hand across the subcontinent. 33,000 crore sects commonly called Hindu, all follow Sanatana Dharma, there are also Jain, Sikh & Buddhists springing out of this, 7 sects of Islam, over 700 Adivasi Tribes & a small percentage of Christian converts all sharing the blessings of Mother India in peace.
Our tiny speck of a micro-ashram, rooted in a distant unknown region, is managed by an NGO founded on Interfaith, a modern word for Advaita. Here we promote peace between religions, cultures & economies through charitable initiatives in education centered on Yoga, as well as traditional Arts, Computers & English, with emphasis on Girl’s & Women’s Upliftment Advocacy. The initiation of NIWS sprang from the Guru-Shishya Parampara of Swami Anantram Guruji and Swamini Niradhara Amma. SwAr is an acronym for his name – Sw (swami) Anant ram – a humble Siddha, never seeking fame or name. He lived very simply for the final 28 years of his life in this ancient primitive partial ruins. It was built by the beloved Queen Ahilya-bai, India’s only Matriarch, nearly 300 years ago at the same time that she built the Kashi Vishvanath Mandir just steps away. Restoration of this Heritage property to its original condition is among Amma’s fondest wishes, pending funding and proper permissions. It is her home since 11 years, where she continues to live a simple life 6 years after Swamiji’s Mahasamadhi.
WE DO NOT OWN ANY ROOMS. THIS IS AMMA’S HOME, & WE HAVE THE RIVER FRONT TEACHING FACILITY & LIBRARY IN A PICTURESQUE PRIMITIVE PARTIAL RUINS. YOU WILL STAY AT BEAUTIFULLY RESTORED HERITAGE LODGING VERY NEAR IN OUR SAME FORT. (seen on our Yoga Events and FAQ pages).
Revered Sages such as Sri Adi Shankaracharya, Markaneya, Valmiki & Veda Vyasa wrote Shastras & Shlokas about our Mother Narmada, the life force power serving as the natural ancient border of the North & South. Flowing from East to West, Narmada Devi resists much of what seduces modern India today – our impetus is sharing our culture with the West but not taking from it. We are children of Mother India, residing in Her Heart, the Central Chakra. It is our duty to keep our culture intact among a blur of influence today via the world wide web. The Vedantic culture is by nature Advaitic (non-dual). We accept everyone’s beliefs as equally valid because our core belief is that all the various names of Gods are created by humans and mere nicknames for One Universal Un-namable Cosmic Energy. Thus is the Indigo Lens of India, the subcontinent with perhaps the most powerful Ajna Chakra (third eye). A perspective springing forth not from any person, place or thing on Earth, but from the Center of the Universe itself.
The Temple you see here anchored in the Center of Maa Narmada is Baneshwar Mahadev Mandir, the Center of the Universe. Not because it is merely the Center of India, it actually marks the spot of leylines that cross here from Polaris to the core of the Earth and laterally across the entire Golden Means of the Planet. The tales of this very place are scribed in Puranic Texts, with allegorical description of the powerful electro-magnetic energy created by the vortex of converging leylines across 700km of this most Sacred River. In easy eyesight of SwAr Ashram, it is only a short boat yatra to this ancient secret site, to launch your Inner Yatra. They called us Indians when “discovering” the Americas, believing that we are of the same stuff – and we are. Earth’s inhabitants are made of star-stuff, billion year old carbon. Once upon a time, all peoples were Indigenous to their respective lands. Now, many are migratory, we can fly by the modern Pushpa Vimanas as only the Gods of ancient times could do. From this Eye in the sky, we can see each land is a Library Section belonging to the Universal Akashic One in which our planet is just a pale blue dot in the longest epic that is still being written.

Voluntourism is for persons who wish to study Yoga at SwAr Ashram. Your biggest benefit is that you get the perks of an Ashram Yogic Lifestyle while you are here. You are required to attend Daily Ashram Meditation, Yoga & Yajnya, Aarti & Puja, as well as a pre-agreed Seva (Volunteerism) time per day, choose your day off. We will arrange a comfortable room and meals for you, use of Library, wi-fi and garden, and the opportunity to serve something greater than yourself for a few hours per day, by helping an under-served Community that is very grateful for you.
You may structure your Seva time from after breakfast til bed-time but we request once you choose your working hours that you stick to a schedule. The skills that will get top priority placement are:
Online Retreat Marketer, Hardware & Software Techs, Web Designer, Copy Writer
Daily Perks: You will get Daily Ashram Meditation, Yoga & Yajnya, Aarti & Puja, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, use of Library, wi-fi and garden, and the opportunity to serve something greater than yourself for a few hours per day, by helping an under-served Community that is very grateful for you. Keep in mind, the Ashram program is mandatory to attend.
Extra perk for staying the full 2 weeks (12 days Volunteering) is a full day of Guided Teachings &Tours in one day trip of up to 5 sites by car & boat during one of your last full days OR a half price car departure transfer to Indore. Please note that 2 weeks is recommended because more frequent turnover of Guests reduces the effectiveness & efficiency of the work tremendously, as well as incurs more staff hours.
Additional days may be calculated.
You may stay one more second term totaling 4 weeks of Voluntourism for the same rates billed a second time. The 2nd perk of the month is a day trip to OMkareshwar or a free car transfer to Indore.
Optional Guided Sacred Teachings, Technologies, Therapies & Tours can be booked on your days off or you may go anywhere on your own.
Optional Local Ayurvedic Massage, Facials, Yoga Therapy, Sound Therapy & Reiki are available at very low cost on campus.
We do not own a car. We pay the same as you do, however, we can arrange it on our end for less than you would pay in Indore. It is a 2.5 hour drive or 3 – 4 hours by bus.
We also do not own housing. so let me use that to preface a reply to the #1 FAQ.
Some people ask why they have to ‘pay’ to volunteer. This is an excellent opportunity to explain how finances work in undeveloped countries, as well as what Seva/ Karma Yoga from a Yogic perspective really means.
If you are living in your own home, will any local charity to your home pay for your food & housing while you volunteer? How can you expect that an NGO in an under-developed country, (having not even enough funds to pay a salary to a local person for the job you are volunteering to do), can pay for your tourist priced hotel room and restaurant meals while you volunteer?
The Voluntourist overhead costs are 10-20 times what it would cost us to hire local people to do the same jobs. If we accepted volunteer help, and paid for your housing & meals, we would be doing a dis-service to the poor community that we serve by cutting out an available job for them, as well as spending money on the volunteer that could have paid an average of 15 days wages for every one day that you spend here. This is just not possible as well as illogical. Perhaps big multinationals can offer a better ‘deal’ than we can, but we do not even own property to house you or a public kitchen to feed you. We are poor!
You are considering what do do with your expendable income on your vacation and there is enough in your bank account to buy an airline ticket. The cost of that ticket alone would fund our textbook program for a year. We struggle to provide 200+ textbooks per year to our welfare students. Factor in the cost of our time spent arranging a room and meals for you and your airport transfers, supervision and co-ordination of the work you will be doing for us and translators all need to be hired to manage the fact that we would have a volunteer on site. So we actually incur costs by inviting volunteers – over and above the cost of your room and meals.
Please consider that we DO love and appreciate you, and we very much need Tech Volunteers to maintain our student’s computers, Web Designers to upgrade our site and organize our e-files, as well as Social Marketers to attract more Guests who might pay for Yoga to come to this remote place – so that potentially we will earn more income to fund and expand our charities. But we can not pay for your hotel and meals out of the small funds which Amma earns for our NGO from Yoga teaching, which is meant for textbooks and feminine hygiene to keep hundreds of girls in school among other expenses of just maintaining our bills. If we had any excess funds at all, we could and would hire a tech and marketer from Indore and it would cost less to hire that person for 2 weeks than it would cost us to pay your living expenses for even 1 day.
We have no paid workers. Amma Niradhara herself is unpaid and has been spending her modest life savings to pay her Ashram’s rent, utilities and her own meals to live here for the last 12 years. This is the definition of a Sevaka. Seva (self-less service) aka Karma Yoga (the right-actions of a Yogi / the work of seeing that there are no ‘others’ , that as we serve others, so we serve ourself), means to give your time without expectation of anything in return. Out of our recognition that we are blessed with more than we need for basic survival while others struggle to survive, we are grateful as we give that time or that extra few dollars. We give in gratitude because we have it to give. This is service.
When you open your heart by giving your time to someone in need, particularly in an environment that is under-served and under-developed as a whole, the expansion of your soul-consciousness is immense.
so. if you do want the marvelous & rewarding experience of immersion in the daily life of rustic, rural, real India while volunteering for an Ashram that gives 100% of its income to its poor & needy community. And you want to have a meaningful and economical use of your vacation time & money with all the perks of living like a Yogi in Ashram environment, this is your place!
Bless YOU! NARMADE HAR!
